Choose the connection that matches both ends
- Match one computer output to one supported soundbar input before connecting anything.
- Use direct USB on supported Dell models, or analog, optical, or Bluetooth when both endpoints support that route.
- For HDMI ARC, send the computer's HDMI audio to an ARC-enabled TV first, then connect the TV to the soundbar.
- Finish by selecting the soundbar as the computer's playback device and playing audio.
Look at the ports on the computer and soundbar as one signal path, then choose the row below that matches both ends. We'd use the shortest documented path the hardware supports because every extra display or wireless hop adds another setting you must get right.

A laptop can use a documented Dell connection when it has the necessary USB or audio port, but the soundbar won't mount to the laptop. Dell soundbars don't include Bluetooth, so choose their wired route instead of trying to pair one.
USB is the direct route for supported Dell models
The Dell Slim Conferencing Soundbar SB522A and Slim Soundbar SB521A carry power and audio over one USB cable. Connect that cable directly to the computer for the fewest hops.
You can also connect a supported USB soundbar to a compatible Dell monitor. Dell's compatibility and connection guidance (opens in a new tab) says to confirm that the monitor supports the soundbar, then connect the monitor's USB upstream cable to the computer. Without that upstream link, the monitor route won't carry the soundbar connection back to the computer.
- Connect the supported Dell USB soundbar to the computer's USB port, or to the USB port on a compatible Dell monitor. The soundbar should receive power and audio through that cable.
- If you used the monitor, connect its USB upstream cable to the computer. The complete USB path should now run from computer to monitor to soundbar.
- In Windows, open Start, Settings, System, Sound. Under Output, choose the Dell soundbar as the default device, then play audio.
An AC-powered Dell soundbar such as the AX510 or AX510 PA uses its own power adapter and a separate audio or USB connection to the computer. Power it through its adapter, then make the audio connection its model supports.
Analog and optical worked examples on the Yamaha SR-C20A
For an analog connection, use a cable long enough to reach, with a 3.5 mm stereo plug at each end. Connect the computer's analog or headphone output to the soundbar's analog input, then set the computer to send sound through its analog output.
On the Yamaha SR-C20A worked example, the soundbar input is labeled ANALOG. Place the bar directly in front of the computer, facing your seat at roughly chest level. Yamaha uses this compact model as its example because larger soundbars take more space and aren't designed for close-up listening.
For a direct optical link, first confirm that the computer really has an optical or S/PDIF output and the soundbar has an optical input. Yamaha's computer connection guide (opens in a new tab) says most computers don't offer that output. When both ports exist, connect one end of an optical cable to the computer and the other to the soundbar's optical input.
The SR-C20A also supports a display-assisted optical route. Run HDMI from the computer to a monitor or TV with optical output, connect that optical output to the SR-C20A input labeled TV, and set the computer to send audio over HDMI.
HDMI ARC needs a compatible TV in the middle
Computers typically don't have ARC built in, so an ARC jack on a soundbar isn't a direct computer connection. This route works through an ARC-enabled TV being used as the computer's display.
- Connect the computer's HDMI output to the ARC-enabled TV. The TV should receive the computer's picture and HDMI audio.
- Connect a second HDMI cable between the TV's ARC connection and the soundbar's ARC input. The TV now sits between the computer and soundbar.
- Change the computer's audio output so sound goes over HDMI instead of another attached device such as a headset, then play audio.
Bluetooth pairing has two separate decisions
Bluetooth is available only when the soundbar supports it. The Yamaha SR-C20A is the documented example, while the Dell soundbars covered above have no Bluetooth function.
- Put the SR-C20A in Bluetooth mode. On the bar itself, press the arrow control repeatedly until the blue Bluetooth light comes on. The remote or Yamaha Sound Bar Controller app can also switch modes.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the computer. Yamaha's menu examples place Bluetooth under Devices in Windows and under Internet & Wireless in Mac System Preferences, though menu names belong to those OS-era instructions.
- Make sure the soundbar is discoverable. The SR-C20A becomes discoverable automatically when you switch it to Bluetooth mode.
- On Windows, select the soundbar from the displayed device list. On the documented Mac route, use the Bluetooth icon, then the audio menu, and select the soundbar for output.
- Set the soundbar as the default audio playback device and play computer audio. Sound from the computer should now come through the bar.
Radio pairing and audio output selection are separate parts of this path. Seeing the soundbar in the Bluetooth device list gets the devices paired, while choosing it as the playback output sends computer sound to it.
The playback setting decides where sound goes
A connected cable or completed pairing isn't the final check. Set the soundbar as the default playback device, play audio from the computer, and check the volume on both the computer and soundbar.
On Windows with a Dell soundbar, go to Start, Settings, System, Sound and choose the soundbar under Output. The Dell SB521A has no volume knob, so use the computer's sound settings for its volume. The SB522A can be controlled with its own controls or the computer's sound settings.
If the USB soundbar doesn't appear or stays silent, check the connection at both ends first. When it runs through a monitor, confirm the monitor's USB upstream cable reaches the computer, then try another USB port for a USB-powered model.
For a silent Bluetooth connection, confirm that the soundbar is still the default playback device and that both volume controls are turned up. If those checks don't restore sound, unpair the computer and soundbar, then pair them again.
Trace the chosen path before changing it
The connection worked when audio played on the computer comes from the soundbar. If it doesn't, stay with the route you chose and trace its endpoints in order instead of changing several parts at once.
- USB through a monitor: soundbar to monitor USB, then monitor USB upstream to the computer.
- Direct analog: computer analog or headphone output to the soundbar's analog input, with analog selected on the computer.
- Direct optical: computer optical or S/PDIF output to the soundbar's optical input.
- Display-assisted optical: computer HDMI to a display with optical output, then display optical output to the SR-C20A TV input.
- Bluetooth: supporting soundbar in discoverable mode, paired on the computer, then selected as the default playback device.
- ARC through a TV: computer HDMI to an ARC-enabled TV, TV ARC to soundbar ARC, with computer audio sent over HDMI.
If the matching path is complete but playback still fails, use the product maker's support for that soundbar, computer, monitor, or TV. Tell them the exact models, the connection path, whether the soundbar appears in the computer's output list, and which volume and reconnection checks you've already completed.
