How to Connect Bluetooth Headphones to a Roku TV

Choose the right listening path first

We'd check for the Wireless headphones row before touching the headphones, because its presence tells you whether the direct signal path is available. A generic Bluetooth feature may serve a different direction, while Roku separately identifies direct Headphone Mode and mobile-app listening.

You can find your exact TV model from Home under Settings > System > About. Keep that model name handy because Roku's published TV coverage contains two competing descriptions that you need to read literally.

Check whether direct Headphone Mode is available

Your headphones must support Bluetooth 4.2 or newer, and the TV must support Bluetooth Headphone Mode. The practical on-screen check is Settings > Remotes & devices: Wireless headphones appears only on a compatible Roku device.

Roku's compatibility list includes Roku Select Series HD TV from 2025 onward and Roku Select Series 4K TV from 2025 onward. A separate note is narrower, naming only Roku Select Series 4K (2025), Roku Plus Series, and Roku Pro Series TVs as models that can pair with Bluetooth headphones for Headphone Mode.

Use the Wireless headphones row on your own TV as the deciding check before following the direct-pairing procedure. If it isn't present, move to the mobile-app method instead.

Pair the headphones directly

Have the headphones nearby and use their actual pairing mode, not merely their normal powered-on state. If you don't know the button or hold sequence, use the headphone manufacturer's instructions because those controls vary by headphone model.

1. Press Home on the Roku remote, then open Settings. You should see the Settings menu.
2. Select Remotes & devices, then Wireless headphones. The Wireless headphones screen should open.
3. Select Add new wireless headphones. The Roku TV should begin looking for headphones.
4. Turn on the headphones and put them in pairing mode. Their own pairing indicator should activate as described by their manufacturer.
5. Wait while the TV scans, which can take up to 30 seconds. Your headphones should appear in the available-device list.
6. Select your headphones from that list. After pairing, they should appear in the TV's paired-device list.

Pairing information is retained when the devices are powered off, so you generally pair the headphones once. When you adjust the volume after a successful pairing, a headphone icon appears on the television screen.

Reconnect and control a paired set

A previously paired set doesn't need to go through discovery again. From Home, return to Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones, select your headphones, and choose Connect.

If content is already playing, press Star on the Roku remote and select Wireless headphones. Roku also says powered-on headphones will usually try to reconnect to their most recent device, but the Settings route gives you a manual way back when that doesn't happen.

The Roku remote's volume buttons or the controls on the headphones can adjust loudness. Compatible Roku devices can also accept play, pause, next-track, and previous-track commands from the headphones, although the available volume and media controls depend on what the headphones support.

A screensaver or several minutes without streamed audio can make the Roku device disconnect the headphones to reduce their battery use. Return to Wireless headphones and connect them again when you're ready to listen.

Listen through the Roku mobile app

On a supported setup, the app sends Roku audio through headphones already connected to your phone or tablet. Install the latest Roku remote app, connect the mobile device and Roku device to the same wireless network, then pair and connect the Bluetooth headphones to the mobile device.

1. Leave the headphones off your ears, then open the Roku remote app. The app should open with your connected Roku available.
2. Tap Remote in the navigation bar. The remote controls should appear.
3. Tap the Headphone icon to activate Headphone Mode. Adjust the volume to a comfortable level before putting on the headphones.

While mobile Headphone Mode is active, the TV speakers are silent. For live over-the-air television, this method requires an HDTV antenna and a digital broadcast; analog over-the-air broadcasts aren't supported.

Set up more than one listener

You can't connect multiple headphones directly to one Roku TV. For a shared session on a supported setup, up to four mobile devices can use Headphone Mode at the same time through the Roku remote app.

Each listener needs the app route on a mobile device. If someone connects headphones to a compatible Roku voice remote, Headphone Mode is deactivated on every connected mobile device.

Confirm the connection and finish listening

For direct listening, confirm that the headphones appear in the paired-device list and watch for the headphone icon when you change volume. To end the session, power off the headphones.

For mobile listening, the silent TV speakers confirm that Headphone Mode is routing sound through the app. Tap the Headphone icon again to end that session, and the app leaves Headphone Mode.
