How Far Apart Should Your Speakers Be? Spacing That Works

Set speaker spacing from your listening seat, then refine wall clearance and toe-in for balanced stereo sound.

Let your listening seat set the starting point

The short version
  • Start with speaker separation roughly equal to the distance from each speaker to your listening seat.
  • Follow your speaker maker's placement instructions first. Use the triangle as an adjustable starting point.
  • Treat wall clearance and inward angle as separate adjustments, then listen for balanced stereo imaging.

If your chair is already in place, we'd build the layout around that listening position first, because equal speaker-to-seat distances help the two channels reach your ears together. That gives you a useful starting relationship between the speakers and your seat, even when your room isn't perfectly symmetrical.

For a two-speaker stereo setup, your own speaker's placement instructions take priority because different speakers are designed for different purposes. ELAC's general placement guidance (opens in a new tab) offers its recommendations when the manufacturer provides none. The goal is a starting arrangement you can refine by listening, with the room and your preferences guiding the final position.

Measure all three sides of the triangle

An approximately equilateral triangle has three roughly equal sides: the gap between the speakers and the distance from each speaker to you. The listening distance here runs from each speaker to your listening position. Keep that relationship in mind when choosing separation, so the width of the pair stays connected to where you'll actually sit.

  1. Choose the listening position you'll use to set up the pair, giving the triangle a definite third point.
  2. Use a tape measure to check the distance from each speaker to that position, adjusting placement until the two readings are roughly equal.
  3. Measure the separation between the speakers and adjust the layout so it's roughly the same as those speaker-to-seat distances, leaving three approximately equal sides.

Measuring helps you check a difference that matters to your ears: sound arrival time. KEF's placement guidance (opens in a new tab) specifically recommends a tape measure because your brain is sensitive to differences in when sound reaches you.

What the starting numbers actually mean

If you want a distance to begin with, keep the recommendation attached to the manufacturer and speaker category. ELAC and KEF give different numerical baselines, and ELAC qualifies its bookshelf and floorstanding figures differently. Those qualifications help you choose a starting layout that fits the speakers you're setting up.

KEF's baseline (opens in a new tab) also calls for a wall or boundary behind the speakers. Use its size-dependent range together with that layout and the listening triangle. ELAC's general recommendations likewise belong within a setup you can adjust to your liking.

Give both speakers similar surroundings

Where the room allows it, give the left and right speakers similar surroundings. ELAC recommends centering the pair along the longest wall so each speaker has equal clearance to its respective side wall. This adds room symmetry to the equal listening distances you've already established.

KEF likewise favors equal distances to the left and right side walls, with those surfaces made of the same material, for stereo imaging. It also advises avoiding placement too close to side walls. Those are useful considerations when you're choosing which part of the room can accommodate the pair.

Side-wall clearance still needs listening-based adjustment. In KEF's guidance on room placement (opens in a new tab), nearby side walls can unbalance tonal character, while a complete lack of interaction with them can make the stereo image very small. If your home can't provide perfect symmetry, the triangle remains a useful way to reduce imbalance.

Wall clearance answers a different question

Keep two measurements separate: the distance across the pair sets separation, while the distance from the cabinets to the walls sets boundary clearance. Moving a pair into a geometrically tidy triangle still leaves you with wall distances to consider, because nearby boundaries affect the sound too.

ELAC recommends at least 2–3 feet from the nearest walls (opens in a new tab) to reduce boundary interference and reflections that can hurt clarity. It also describes the target as about 24 inches or more, with speakers kept out of corners unless their manufacturer specifies otherwise. Speakers designed for near-wall use are an explicit exception.

KEF gives a different range for the front wall, meaning the wall behind the speakers: a typical optimum of 300–1000 mm. Its instruction is to experiment for the best low-frequency response and keep both speakers the same distance from that wall. Keep this front-wall recommendation distinct from ELAC's nearest-wall guidance.

Listen for bass notes becoming unevenly prominent as you consider wall clearance. Low frequencies radiate in more directions than high frequencies, so hard boundaries such as walls and windows matter. A nearby wall boosts bass, and a corner boosts it further, but that boost can favor particular notes and leave the sound unbalanced.

A tight wall position makes port design relevant

Check the port arrangement when the available space puts your speakers near a wall. For rear-ported speakers, ELAC's general rule is to leave space behind them to avoid a buildup of energy. It allows experimentation with different placements, so judge the bass as you refine that clearance.

If you're choosing speakers for a location that requires near-wall placement, ELAC recommends considering a front-firing or bottom-firing port (opens in a new tab). It names the Debut Bookshelf Speaker as a front-port example and Carina Speakers as bottom-port examples. That recommendation concerns the design you choose for the location, while separation still follows the listening arrangement.

Use toe-in when your speakers call for it

Before turning either cabinet inward, check whether your speaker's manufacturer calls for that angle. Some speakers are designed to sit parallel to the back wall, so keep those straight as specified. For speakers whose instructions permit toe-in, the inward angle is another adjustment you can use to refine the listening position.

Aim the speakers toward your listening position so the drivers point toward your ears, and turn both speakers equally. Adjust the angle a few degrees at a time while listening for the stereo image and high-frequency balance. ELAC's toe-in guidance (opens in a new tab) also suggests reducing the angle when you want a wider listening space, such as when friends are listening with you.

High frequencies are more directional, and outside the best listening position you can hear less of them relative to other frequencies. Bass is less directional and can build up in particular places. That helps explain why changing where you listen can change the balance you hear, even with the speakers in the same positions.

Listen for balance, then refine the layout

From the listening position, pay attention to how the two channels form the stereo image. Unsuitable separation can leave the sound muddy or create a large gap in the soundstage. Those are reasons to revisit spacing, with the triangle's intended balance and aligned channel arrival as your reference.

Use what you hear to decide whether the layout needs more adjustment: a muddy presentation or an obvious gap means there's still a spacing problem to work on. ELAC treats its general layout as a starting point you can refine to your liking, so listen as you change placement.

If you're still unhappy after working through placement, reconsider the seat and the room arrangement. KEF recommends changing the setup (opens in a new tab) when the result remains unsatisfying, because listening position matters as much as speaker position and the room's surfaces affect what you hear. Try a different listening position as part of that rearrangement.
