Match the light to what you were doing
- A blinking orange battery light means low battery. Start with the charging checks below.
- A flashing orange status light during setup means your Move is establishing a connection.
- Rapid orange status flashes after Play/Pause mean you should start something in the Sonos app.
- For a steady orange status light or alternating orange and white, follow the separate branches below.
If the light appeared when you put the speaker down, started setup or tapped Play/Pause, that timing helps you choose the next action. We'd identify the indicator before changing anything, because the Move's battery light and status light use orange for different messages.
The battery light reports battery status. The separate status light reports WiFi or Bluetooth connection, muted volume and errors. Sonos's status-light guidance for speakers and portable speakers (opens in a new tab) covers that second indicator, so match both the indicator's job and its pattern.
Charge a low battery on the base
Choose a dry indoor place for the charging base before connecting the Move. You can use the speaker for outdoor listening, but its included base is for indoor use only and must stay dry. Keep the speaker upright during use, since Sonos prohibits using it upside down.
For either charging method, keep the Move out of rainstorms. Its IP56 water and dust resistance still comes with a restriction against soaking rain to reduce fire and electric-shock risk. That restriction applies to the speaker even when you're using USB-C away from its base.
Keep the installed battery away from excessive heat, such as sunshine or fire. The Move's stated operating temperature is 32–113°F (0–45°C), so choose your charging spot within that operating limit. Leave the mains plug accessible for disconnection, and unplug the equipment during lightning storms or long periods of nonuse.
Set the Move on its base and check that it's seated properly with the charging contacts touching. If it's already on the base, check both the seating and contact alignment before moving on. The Move charging instructions (opens in a new tab) require those contacts to touch, and you don't need an extra cable between the speaker and base.
Choose the right USB-C charger
If you're away from the base, use the Move's USB-C connection with a compatible charger. The specified supply is USB-C Power Delivery, rated 45W, 20V/2.25A. Check for that power specification when choosing your charger, as well as the USB-C connector.
The base and USB-C input have different electrical specifications. The base's listed output is 18.0VDC, 2.5A, 45.0W, while USB-C calls for the PD supply above. Use the Move's USB-C charging specification (opens in a new tab) when selecting a USB-C charger, rather than copying the base's output voltage.
This gives you a charging option when the base isn't available. The compatible USB-C charger is sold separately, and a USB-C cable isn't included with the Move, so account for both when putting together that charging setup.
The battery light goes solid, then turns off
Look for solid orange on the battery indicator when charging starts. It may stay lit for several minutes, depending on how low the battery is. On this indicator, the steady light is the charging-start cue, so you can move from checking the connection to checking battery progress.
If that light goes out while the Move is charging, the battery continues to charge. You can keep the charging connection in place through that change. The light's illuminated period and the battery's charging period are different things.
Open the Sonos app to see the Move's remaining battery life. That's the useful reading to check after charging, because the battery light reports the start of charging and can then turn off. The Move battery guidance (opens in a new tab) explains both behaviors, letting you judge progress from the app instead of the length of the orange glow.
Orange flashes during setup
While you're setting up the Move, flashing orange on its status indicator means it's establishing a connection. The context matters here: this is the connection activity described in Sonos's orange status-light guidance (opens in a new tab), separate from the battery indicator's low-charge message.
Watch whether the status light continues flashing or becomes continuously orange. A change to solid orange during setup means the setup process couldn't complete, which moves you to the solid-orange response below. Keeping those two patterns separate helps you distinguish connection activity from an unsuccessful setup attempt.
Play/Pause produces rapid orange flashes
Rapid flashes immediately after pressing Play/Pause point to what the speaker has available to play. Its playback queue may be empty, or nothing may have played recently. In that situation, the button has no queued or recent playback to resume.
Open the Sonos app, choose something and start it playing there. This is the response Sonos gives for rapid orange flashes after Play/Pause (opens in a new tab). Your check is the listening result: the audio you selected should start.
Keep the button press attached to this interpretation. The useful clue is that the flashes followed your request to play, while orange flashes seen during setup belong to the connection branch. That distinction gives you a specific action in the app instead of treating every orange flash as the same problem.
The status light stays solid orange
A continuously orange status light during setup means the setup process couldn't finish. Rebooting can clear that state. This is a different indicator from the battery light that turns solid orange when charging begins.
A solid orange status light can also mean overheating. For that condition, turn the speaker off and allow it to cool before powering it back on. Cooling belongs between shutdown and restart, so include it whenever overheating is possible.
To shut the Move down normally, hold its power button for five seconds. A short press puts it to sleep, so use the full power-off action for this reboot. The Move power controls (opens in a new tab) distinguish sleep from shutdown.
Once the speaker has cooled if needed, press the power button to turn it on and check the status light. If it remains solid orange, contact Sonos Support through the direction in its solid orange status-light guidance (opens in a new tab).
Orange and white alternate
Look for white flashes between the orange ones, because that combination has its own meanings. The status indicator flashes orange and white during an update. If you've already started a factory reset, the same pattern appears while that reset is in progress.
Sonos also identifies a rare fault condition that can produce alternating orange and white. The pattern alone doesn't separate that fault from an update or reset, so use what was happening when it appeared to give support the right context.
For the fault condition on a Move, contact Sonos Support as directed in its orange-and-white status-light guidance (opens in a new tab). Tell them that the light alternates orange and white and whether an update or an already-running reset was involved. Those details distinguish this indication from orange-only connection activity and the battery light's charging behavior.
