Reset Restart Sony TV Using the Right Method

Keep your setup intact first

If you've got sound without a picture or an app that's barely responding, we'd try the remote restart first because it can resolve those problems without wiping your setup. The useful first distinction is whether the TV responds to the remote, since that determines whether to restart it from your seat or move to the power reset.

Before any of the reset methods below, disconnect external USB devices from the TV, including the USB cable for an external hard disk. This prerequisite applies before restarting as well as before a factory reset.

Restart with the remote

BRAVIA 6 (A60) owners should use the separate Google TV restart procedure referenced in Sony's US restart guidance (opens in a new tab). Sony explicitly redirects that model, so the generic restart sequence below isn't the A60 procedure.

For the applicable models, begin with the TV turned on. The remote needs to be aimed at the TV's illumination LED or status LED for this sequence.

1. Hold POWER on the supplied remote for about five seconds, or until the TV displays Power off.
2. Wait about one minute for the TV to turn back on automatically. If it doesn't return, press POWER on the remote to turn it on.
3. Check the original problem again, such as whether the picture appears or the app responds normally.

If you see a Restart option

A Cancel or Restart menu can appear during the POWER hold instead. Sony's US restart guidance (opens in a new tab) describes this after three seconds or longer, depending on the model and operating system.

The BRAVIA help guide with the two-second alternative (opens in a new tab) gives a two-second hold followed by selecting Restart, also depending on the model. These are model-dependent alternatives: when your TV offers Restart, select it.

You can also use a settings menu without unplugging the TV. Choose the single route below that matches what you see, including the final Restart confirmation.

Try the unplug power reset

Move to an unplug power reset if the remote restart didn't help, or if the TV doesn't respond to the remote. Skip this method if the power cord is inaccessible.

Leaving the TV disconnected allows the electricity remaining inside it to discharge. Sony explains that unnecessary data and error information in memory return to their defaults, while your saved TV settings and data stay intact.

There's a procedural variation here. Sony's dedicated restart instructions (opens in a new tab) and both BRAVIA help guides include pressing and releasing the TV's power button while unplugged; Sony's general reset instructions (opens in a new tab) omit that action. The sequence below follows the version that includes it.

Locate the TV's power button before unplugging. Its position varies by model, commonly underneath at the center or on the back toward either side; use your TV manual for its exact location.

1. Turn the TV off, then unplug its power cord from the electrical outlet. Leave the TV disconnected.
2. Press and release the power button on the TV itself. Keep the TV unplugged for two minutes.
3. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet, then check whether the original issue is resolved.

Before you erase the TV

If the problem remains after restarting and power resetting, a factory data reset is the next reset option when you can access Settings. This returns the TV to its original factory specifications, so make the decision before entering the confirmation screens.

Factory reset through Settings

When the HOME screen is available, press Quick Settings or HOME on the supplied remote, depending on your TV, then select Settings. From there, follow the matching menu route below; each is an alternative path to the same factory-reset operation.

If Settings has System, choose System → About → Reset → Factory data reset → Erase everything → Yes. This is the System route in Sony's US reset instructions (opens in a new tab).

If Settings has Device Preferences, choose Device Preferences → Reset → Factory data reset → Erase everything → Yes. If it has Storage & reset instead, choose Storage & reset → Factory data reset → Erase everything → Yes.

If HOME won't open

A HOME button that doesn't bring up the home screen still leaves other menu routes on some TVs. After the earlier resets have failed, try ACTION MENU or Quick Settings if your remote has one and the TV responds.

In that branch, Sony's US instructions (opens in a new tab) first direct you to Settings → Device Preferences, then list the System and Device Preferences factory-reset routes as alternatives according to the available menu options. Use the matching route from the preceding section.

If ACTION MENU or Quick Settings gets no response, try HELP, or press Input and select Help. Select Manual (Help Guide) → Settings → Using the Quick Settings → Settings, then follow the System factory-reset route above.

On other models, press HELP and look under How to use your TV for Help Guide (Manual). Continue through Settings → Configuring the TV → Watching TV or TV → Settings, then use the Device Preferences or Storage & Reset factory-reset route that matches your menu.

The PIN prompt and setup afterward

Selecting Erase everything may prompt for the PIN already set on your TV. Enter that PIN when requested, then wait for the factory reset to finish; Sony describes the process as taking a few moments.

Successful completion brings up the Initial Setup wizard. Follow it to set up the TV again; Sony states that you must agree to the Google Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy during this setup.
