Most bookshelf speakers and soundbars roll off before they reach the lowest notes in a movie or a bass-heavy track. The Edifier T5s Powered Subwoofer fills that gap with an 8-inch long-throw woofer driven by a 70W RMS Class-D amplifier, reaching down to 35Hz. We'd consider it for a desktop, a small living room or a bedroom TV setup where you want to feel the low end without replacing your main speakers.
The T5s is not a standalone speaker. It needs a host system to feed it a signal, so think of it as an add-on for a stereo pair or an amplifier that already handles your left and right channels. At $149.99, it sits below its typical price over the last 90 days of $185.63, and it matches the lowest price we've seen.
How the T5s connects to your existing gear
The signal path is straightforward if your speakers or amp have a subwoofer output. You run an RCA cable from that sub out to the T5s Signal In, and your main speakers stay connected to the source as usual. Edifier lists official compatibility with several of its own desktop and bookshelf models, along with other speakers and AV amps that offer a sub out or RCA ports.
If your setup has no sub out, the T5s can sit in series between your source and your main speaker. That path runs from the source into the T5s Signal In, then out from Signal Out to the speaker. The catch is that the main speaker needs a LINE IN connection for this to work, and sources that are Bluetooth, USB, optical or otherwise non-wired are not supported in that chain. Check which connection your gear uses before you buy.
Once connected, the low-pass filter spans 30Hz to 160Hz so you can blend the sub with your mains, and the phase selector offers 0 or 180 degrees to help it mesh with your speakers. The T5s also has auto-standby that kicks in after 15 minutes of inactivity, and Edifier includes both a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable and an RCA cable in the box. Our advice is to confirm your speaker or amp has the right port before ordering, since the T5s cannot create a subwoofer output that is not there.
Where the T5s fits and when to pass
The cabinet uses 18mm MDF with a front-firing driver and a right-firing acoustic port, which helps keep resonance in check and keeps the footprint compact. The wood grain finish and low-profile grille are meant to blend into a room rather than dominate it. That makes the T5s a sensible pick for a desk, a den or a bedroom where a full-size subwoofer would be too much.
We'd skip it if your main speakers already deliver the bass you want, or if your source chain is entirely wireless and you cannot use the series connection. If your speakers have a sub out, the decision is simple. If they do not, the LINE IN requirement on your main speaker is the one thing to verify before you commit.
From source to room: with 35Hz extension and a 70W RMS amplifier, the T5s suits a small room or desktop where you want deeper bass than bookshelf speakers alone can provide. At $149.99, it is at its all-time low.
